There's nothing better to waste away the winter doldrums than a good book. In lieu of something darker, I grabbed a copy of this after Ms. Dodd dangled an excerpt on her Facebook page (she always gets me that way!).What hooked me into this story wasn't the heroine, but her soon-to-be lover, Raul. Usually, it's the strong heroine that lulls me in, but this book surprised me. Raul, compared to some of Dodd's other leading male characters, really starts out as likable (and not just a tortured brute, jerk, thick-headed beast, etc.). He really is a good guy trying to make the right choices. It's Victoria, by contrast, that I don't particularly like in the beginning. She initially comes off as cold, insecure, and a little too much of a know-it-all.
But like every good love story, she grows on me as the book progresses, and her evolving relationship with Raul (and his unending patience for her) holds the story together on its own, despite the adventure and suspense nicely layered between the build-up.
I assumed this would just be another sweet romance. It ended up taking my breath away.

Taken by the Prince Governess Brides Series Christina Dodd 9780451413048 Books Reviews
Christina Dodd writes the kind of novel you want to dive head first into. And the kind of characters you'd love to hang out with. Not to mention fall in love with!
This was a gift. She said it was an okay read.
Really enjoy it, both chacarcters are very charming, she a fearless inteligent down to earth woman he a very well written prince, and both towether very very hot. LOVED IT
I had to read this book after finishing book 9 in the Series. This is my favorite of all her books. A kid napping, romance, intrigue, family issues, steamy scenes, this book has it all.
4.5 Stars
Christina Dodd revives the grandeur in historical romance with Taken by the Prince her latest release that kindles memories of the unforgettable characters, rampant humour, and amusing situations she trademarked in her Distinguished Academy of Governesses series. Doted on with Dodd's careful, but solidly distinctive style, Taken by the Prince is a measured effort, and well...nearly perfect.
This time in Taken by the Prince, Dodd penned a similar theme to an earlier release, The Runaway Princess (1999), with her male lead Saber, a bastard and the unwilling heir apparent to the Viscount of Grimsborough. He is also a prince of Moricadia of the fabled House of de Barbari Jinete. Brought to England because he is Grimsborough's last resort, the Viscount is willing clothe and educate Saber provided he bends to his rules. When Saber (now renamed Raul) comes of age, his one objective other than fleeing the coldness of Grimsborough Abbey would be to return to his beloved country of Moricadia and take back the throne.
But the childhood friend of his sister Belle entrances him and their one shared kiss....that set off sparks of passion for the two of them will not be easily forgotten.
Three years later and now a governess, Victoria Cardiff, the vixen that set his blood boiling crosses his path when on vacation in Moricadia with her host family. Unbeknownst to her, Raul has spent the past three years, and most of his gambling fortune funding an impending revolution against the de Guignards who wrested the throne from Raul's ancestors. When Victoria recognizes Raul at a local hotel, all could be lost if she reveals his true identity as Prince Saber and true heir to the throne of Moricadia.
Like exotic Baminia in The Runaway Princess, Dodd transports the reader to far off Moricadia, where the customs and colors of its citizens fill the pages with richness and a gypsy-like courtliness. From Sabers crumbling ancestral castle, the kidnapped Victoria begins to learn the meaning of yearning as Saber sensually entices her each and every night. But a simple capitulation is not what he seeks. He wants Victoria body, heart and soul.
Cutting my teeth on novelists like Dodd, Deveraux, McNaught, and Garwood, I can honestly say that Dodd's consistent writing style with historical romance fiction and her creation of believable but creatively imagined characters is one of her many strengths. Despite the stutter of her Darkness Chosen series (of which I was not a fan), she continues to write exceptional contemporary and historical romances that I purchase on site.
Taken by the Prince was a satisfying read, with little surprise. Any fan of historical romance will instantly love it because it delivers a well-balanced plot and romance that exceeds expectations. The nights that Raul taunts Victoria are amazingly romantic and heated-the highlight of this extraordinary romance!
I have already unearthed my favorite Dodd novels to re-read The Rules of Surrender, The Rules of Engagement and The Rules of Attraction.
Highly Recommended!
A Fiendishly Bookish Review (and one grumpy cat)
I read this book on my within one day of my download; I was riveted and I finished it at 136 AM CST (and still got up at 600 AM for work)
Saber/Raul is a little rough around the edges (but never with Victoria), direct and single-minded (after all he's has an entire kingdom to save from the "evil" usurpers) and Saber had a horrible childhood on from both sides of his parentage. Raul falls in love despite not knowing love or wanting to.
Victoria is a heroine after my own heart. She's strong, independent, capable to adapting to whatever circumstances she finds herself in(what woman isn't able to adapt to her circumstances) and she holds out for LOVE and will take nothing less.
I am glad to see Ms. Dodd writing historicals again and this is a great start to 2011. I enjoy Ms. Dodd's paranormals; Saber/Raul reminds me of Adrik from Into the Shadow.
Ms. Dodd brings even the secondary characters out with description that a reader wants to see how the characters develop and a reader want those characters to have a happy ending too (It would be great to see Saber's sister Belle have a story).
Buy it, read it, re-read it again and again, Taken by the Prince is another Christina Dodd's "can't miss, can't do without" book.
These last Governess books are where Dodd turned to more serious suspense writing. Like a lot of people I wasn't sure I like it. Until then I loved her historical Governess series but as I continued reading her new books I found I loved Lost Texas Hearts, Fortune Hunters, Darkness Chosen & Scarlett Deception. So, when I read the Governess series again I didn't mind the the change in tempo as much.
There's nothing better to waste away the winter doldrums than a good book. In lieu of something darker, I grabbed a copy of this after Ms. Dodd dangled an excerpt on her Facebook page (she always gets me that way!).
