Havencross by Julie Daines, because the moors feature prominently in its setting and is a romance, could be compared to that classic book, but I think such a comparison would be inaccurate. To me, it was a combination of Blackmoore by Julianne Donaldson (a book most definitely compared to Wuthering Heights) and the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Though the latter books involve ancient magic and younger characters, I believe they share a strong sense of mystery and adventure with Havencross, traits which make it a stand-out in the regency romance genre. And its resemblance to Blackmoore lies in the charm of a main character who thinks she will never marry, but whose expectations of life are turned topsy-turvy by circumstances she could never have foreseen. Indeed, Havencross is a romance in the most charming of ways, mixed with surprising twists of intrigue and suspense.

What Havencross is About
Elaine Cardinham, the main character, and her parents are forced to return to their country home in Cornwall for refuge when a shocking scandal involving her father spreads through London society. But Havencross reminds her of the mysterious disappearance of her brother and a marriage proposal she spurned, both five years ago. There, she runs into the man who offered his hand, Gareth Kemp, and also, surprisingly, into a man who has followed her from London to offer her his hand now. He’s an earl, and she accepts without hesitation so as to escape her circumstances, but finds that Gareth never stopped loving her and that she really doesn’t know her fionce at all. They’re both distracted by dangerous and mysterious smugglers plaguing the Cornish coast, killing neighbors and others more and more frequently. As Elaine attempts to run from her past, she ventures ever closer to a dangerous truth—and finds that Gareth may be the only one who can save her from a deadly finish.

Why I Liked Havencross
There are a couple of elements that make Havencross more than just a romance or a mystery:

The fact that the story develops against the foil of Elaine’s and Gareth’s shared past—his failed proposal and their friendship before that—strengthens it and gives it flavor. Their shared recollections of wandering the moors with her brother, John, who was Gareth’s best friend, provides an emotional depth that I savored.
At a few key points, Elaine is led into some of the caves that pock the coast by a mysterious women who wears a circlet on her head. Elaine thinks she might be King Arthur’s Guinevere, since there are ruins nearby rumored to have been inhabited by the couple. This is where the connection to the Dark is Rising series comes in for me, as it is set in Cornwall as well and involves striving against certain evils. Elaine’s encounters with the mysterious woman pose questions that prowl around the reader’s brain for the duration of the novel, and help to provide critical clues that lead to the answers of other questions.
Who Would Like Havencross
Maybe it’s obvious, but anyone who loves works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Julianne Donaldson, Sarah M. Eden, or Susan Cooper would love Havencross.

What I love about Julie Daines' books is that the mystery often takes center stage, and the romance perfectly complements the action and intrigue. LOVED the setting, loved Gareth, and it was so interesting learning all about smuggling.
I loved this book. Julie Daines writes in such a descriptive way that pictures of the land, ocean, caves, castles and people appear your mind. She has a way of giving you just enough information in each chapter that you must continue reading. Great plot, great personalities. Look forward to her next book.
There are some hard lessons learned in this book! I think I could also learn a thing or two from it!

This story kept me on my toes and had me finishing it without making dinner! There is action, adventure and second chances where the heart is concerned!
I couldn't put it down. I loved everything about the book from the characters, their charming relationship, the original plot, and the quippy writing. Proof that clean books can be wonderfully engaging.
I really enjoyed this story! Ugh I couldn't put it down now I'm paying for it. Daines is becoming one of those authors where I enjoy reading their tale. The only others who I enjoy like Daines is Elizabeth Camden,Kristi Ann Hunter,Sarah Ladd( so far) and Jennifer Moore. If you enjoy any of these authors I think you'll like Julie Daines' - Havencross.
-This story drew me in from the very beginning of the book.

-I liked the stories and legends throughout the book as well as the locations and descriptions.

-This quote is so relevant even more in this day and age

"If a man and a woman vow fidelity, there should be no straying, not even of the slightest. This casual way society had of overlooking such vows left a bitter taste in her mouth. Such marriages could not possibly bring happiness to either partner. There could be no trust."

-Gareth was my favorite character and I liked his sarcastic comments throughout the book.

-While this is a nice thought, unfortunately I am more inclined to agree with Gareth's viewpoint regarding this quote

"I believe that we each must find our own Camelot. Somewhere in this world, there exists a place where we might find the idyllic life we seek. A place of joy and peace, love and respect, where we are whole."

-I hope everything turned out well for the Williams.

These are some of my favorite lines from "Havencross," Daines' new Regency.

Elaine's family flees London on the heels of a scandal between her father and another woman. They return to Elaine's childhood home of Havencross--a part of the countryside known for smugglers. Gareth, the man whose suit Elaine refused five years ago, is still there and now the prosperous owner of a tin mine. Lord Chiverton is also there, having followed Elaine from London, and hoping to continue their relationship. But Elaine is devastated at the division in her family, and at the bleak future that rises ahead.

The helpful and charming ghost of Guinevere appears to Elaine during Elaine's wanderings one day and changes her future. With a little bit of a dark plot twist, two charming lads both named Will, and the bravery of Elaine and Gareth, Daines' weaves an exciting and unique Regency. This book is for those who like romance, but also like strong supporting characters and don't mind ghosts and dead bodies. The last half of the book flies by so don't start it if you don't have a solid block of time to read!
