This novel, "The King’s Blood" by SE Zbasnik, is, on one level, easy to describe: It’s composed of words. Going into more detail than that, however, is a little tricky. There’s magic, mythology, and monsters; there’s a quest (or is it a road trip?); there’s Medieval politics and royal family drama; there’s war and sex and death; there’s grim fairy tales and a darkness rising in the land and more than a few creative anachronisms. Upon this framework is hung themes of racism and sexism and various other chauvinisms, along with the ironic use of elements common to folklore and high fantasy, all to the tune of satiric humor. Imagine Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett collaborating on a mash-up of Lord of the Rings and On The Road and you’ll still have no idea of what this book is. The only way for me to describe it would be to reproduce it word for word, and that would be, you know, plagiarism.

The author has taken her sword to the tropes of fantasy, knocked down the walls of the dungeons, chopped up the dragons into kielbasa, and flicked her Bic at the elder scrolls. Then she used the chunks as building blocks to create a sculpture of words held together with library paste– the thick kind that smells really good and makes you walk funny after you sniff it. That is not to say, however, that this is mere postmodern deconstructionism; this is not hipster literature. This is part of the generational conversation, the sweaty mixing of thematic DNA that keeps the arts evolving and one step ahead of entropy.

There are a lot of laughs in this book, but don’t jump into it expecting slapstick or stand up. This is a solid and satisfying novel that dissects the human condition, and once you begin to laugh, then you inevitably must cry. It’s a journey that takes the characters, and the reader, to unexpected places. Not necessarily places where they want to go or would choose to be, but places everybody needs to find and must not ignore.

I love this book! I love the writing style of S.E. Zbasnik. Her writing really made me feel like I was living in a time where there was magic and soothsayers. As I read the book, I imagined that I was Ciara and what it would be like to be a teenager at a time like this. I absolutely love the character of Ciara.

The flow of the book was great. I never got bored. I was always on the edge of my seat, waiting for whatever came next. As well as being quite dramatic, the book was also fun to read. Who doesn't love a good adventure?!?

The book was well-written, intriguing and interesting. Trust me, with this book, you will never be bored while reading. I don't want to give any spoilers, here... but how could it be anything other that exciting reading the trials and tribulations of a 15 year old trying to save an entire Empire?
Firstly, I will say that I was given a copy of the book by the author to read and review.

I really enjoyed "The King's Blood". The premise is a fantasy trope of unlikely survivor of a royal massacre attempting to win his throne with the assistance of the usual unlikely allies.

And that is about as usual as the book gets.

"The King's Blood" happily smashes its way through all the fairytale ideals and fantasy stereotypes like an ogre with a sledgehammer.

Sabrina Zbasnik's sense of humour is evil in the extreme. Imagine "Lord of the Rings" written by a combination of Douglas Adams and George Carlin and you've almost got a handle on "The King's Blood".

The main characters of Aldrin and Ciara are well written and well rounded. Even though they are 15 when the book begins, this is not a young adult novel by any stretch of the imagination.

Strong, quirky characterisation sits "The King's Blood" well above the average range of the current crop of fantasy novels.

Sabrina Zbasnik provides a wonderfully fun read, and in my opinion, her female characters can hold there own with any seen in Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Sword and Sorceress" series or Esther Friesner's "Chicks in Chainmail" series.

I recommend "The King's Blood" to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy, strong female characters, and has a sense of humour
Honestly could not read more than 17% of this book. It is poorly written and very difficult to follow. Not sure how it received such a high rating.
This one started slow and seemed a bit dry, not the usual style of Zbasnik. However, after reading a little further, the characters started to fill out and the plot became much more interesting. Don't let that slow start discourage, or fool you, into giving up in favor of another book. You'll be very pleased (and surprised!) at how this one picks up, and pulls you along to the end. You'll be glad you did!
This is the story on Aldrin and Ciara and their quest to keep the spare prince alive and standing. Along the way they meet an interesting cast of characters, avoid zombies, and find magic.

The good
I loved this book! It was like 1 part game of thrones, 1 part the sword in the stone and 2 parts cheeky with a dash of romance.

The bad
This is a really fast read that pulls from several genres of books and movies, which is AWESOME! But it can go over your head. There are some minor errors that editing did not catch as well.

I just can't
Believe the ending! I wanted love LOVE LOVE, but I got something a little deeper and more reasonable. Still, I wanted a HEA.
